A woman pays the price for daring to transgress her social status. A powerful family is destroyed by passion, jealousy and cruelty.

400 years after its first performance just one mile away in 1613, Eyestrings Theatre Company are bringing their celebrated production of The Duchess of Malfi to the Southwark Playhouse. This telling of Webster’s Jacobean tragedy cuts to the heart of the play by unleashing the brutal, beautiful and visceral nature of this harrowing tragedy.

With only seven actors, six chairs and a gramophone, the play confronts the themes of morality, class and sex head on. It tells the story of the recently widowed Duchess and her fight for independence from her possessive and cruel brothers.

“This sort of daring, intelligent work is what fringe theatre should be all about.”
