The nearest tube station is Elephant & Castle (Northern Line and Bakerloo Line)
For Southwark Playhouse Elephant, take the Shopping Centre exit. It is an estimated 5-minute walk from this exit to the theatre.
Step-free access
Elephant & Castle is a partially step-free station. Step-free access is only available on southbound Northern line services.
For Southwark Playhouse Elephant, the nearest bus stops are:
- Newington Butts (Routes 133, 155, 196, 333, and 415)
- Elephant & Castle Station (Routes 12, 35, 40, 68, 133, 136, 148, 155, 171, 176, 196. 333, 343, 415, 468 and P5)
It is an estimated 7-minute walk between Elephant & Castle Train Station (Thameslink) and Southwark Playhouse Elephant.
We do not recommend attempting to access the theatre via car. There is very minimal parking in the neighbouring area.

Our Spaces
Entrance / Box Office
There is level access to our Box Office.
When you attend a performance, a member of staff will be present to scan your ticket. They will be stationed to your left as you come through the main entrance door.
The main entrance doors are not automatic and you may find them heavy to open. If you need any assistance entering the building please knock or wave at a member of staff, who can help you access the building. Staff can be identified by their red lanyards with the Southwark Playhouse logo.
Bars and Seating
There is level access to our balcony bar. There is lift access to the basement bar and entrance to stalls seating in the main auditorium. The distance from the main entrance to the lift is 18m. The distance from the lift to stalls left entrance in the basement is 13.5m.
In the balcony bar and basement bar, there are wooden dining chairs (45cm in height) and tables (75cm in height). At both bars, you can purchase drinks, snacks, and any available merchandise.
The bars are both around 110cm in height. If you require assistance in getting your drinks to your table or to your seat in the auditorium, please do ask a member of staff.
Toilets
We have gender-inclusive toilet cubicles on the basement floor.
We have an accessible toilet on the balcony floor and on the basement floor. These do not require a radar key for entry. The accessible toilet cubicles are large enough for a wheelchair user and companion to be inside at the same time and both contain a full-length red cord and grab rails.
We do not have a changing places facility.
Main Space
The Main Space auditorium can seat up to 311 people, depending on its seating configuration.
Basement Seating
Entry to basement seating is accessible via stairs (21 steps) or lift.
Seating in the basement is made up of individual chairs (42cm x 40cm). The chairs do not have arm rests.
The seating layout can vary between productions. For most productions, row AA is at the same level as the playing space, and each row behind it is one additional step up (each step is approximately 12.5cm tall).
Please note, sitting in row AA does not guarantee extra legroom.
Balcony Seating
There is level access to the front row of seating in the balcony. The front row of seating is made up of individual chairs (42cm x 40cm). The chairs do not have arm rests.
The space between the front row of seats and the front of the balcony is narrow and it may not be possible or easy to navigate this row with a mobility aid. Please speak to our Box Office team who can advise on whether these seats are appropriate for you ahead of booking your tickets.
The second row of seats in the balcony, requires navigating three steps (each step is approximately 17cm tall). The second row is made up of high chair seating (47cm x 47cm).
Wheelchair Spaces
Two wheelchair spaces are available in the front row of the stalls for all performances in the Main Space. These spaces are available to book online or over the phone once you have signed up to our free Access Membership.
If you cannot see a vacant wheelchair space on the seating plan for your preferred performance, please contact us directly.
Wheelchair spaces are released to the general public 24 hours before each performance, if they have not yet been sold. If you wish to book the wheelchair space within this time frame, please contact the box office. However, we are unable to guarantee availability.
If you will be transferring out of your wheelchair into a theatre seat, then we advise booking a seat in the front row of the stalls. Our front of house staff will take care of your wheelchair in the lower bar area.
